Maggie Tate is an artist and educator with a PhD in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin, which she completed in 2016. Maggie has taught art and social sciences to students of a range of ages, from 2 to 82. While her sociological studies provided a theoretical understanding of how socialization shapes individuals, it was not until she had two children of her own that she began to truly understand the importance of the early childhood years in forming the emergence of selfhood. Maggie believes a shame-free environment filled with creative opportunities for self expression is vital for young people who are for the first time beginning to see themselves as separate and unique individuals. Her programming at the South Austin Children's Co-op is designed to tap into the natural curiosity of preschool minds and plant the seeds for a life-long love of learning and community.
